Food rescue in Israel

Every day, food that could still feed people goes to waste. Sometimes it is surplus produce, sometimes products that did not sell, sometimes prepared food left over at the end of the day. Food rescue connects a resource that already exists to a need in the community.

The value is twofold: less food is thrown away, and resources are freed up for meals, food parcels and community kitchens. But for it to be safe, dates, storage conditions, temperature and genuine usability all have to be checked.

How does surplus food reach the plate?

The process starts with coordination between the source of the food and the organisation that can take it in. The products are then sorted, unsuitable items set aside, and what remains is transferred in conditions that preserve its quality.

In a community kitchen some of the products can go into the daily menu, and some can go into food parcels or be distributed to families. Planning matters: a successful rescue is not just collecting, but knowing to whom, when and how the food will get there.

What can you do today?

Businesses, institutions and individuals can look at what surplus they produce and approach an association or a local initiative to explore working together. Careful shopping, proper storage and using up leftovers at home are part of the answer too.

When you join the circle of food rescue, every box and every crate gets another chance to become help. The giving starts with a resource that already exists and ends with someone getting food in time.
